NPP Students and Staff in Spring 2019

Our Programs

NPP Programming is made possible through partnerships with schools and community agencies throughout the Los Angeles area. Our long-standing partnership with (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), enables us to provide opportunities for students to burst the "Â鶹ƵµÀBubble" and explore potential careers in education and counseling. Many GEAR UP 4 LA students are students of color who face challenges including transience, living below the poverty line, single-parent households, and being the first in their family to attend college. Through our programming, Â鶹ƵµÀstudents are able to share their journey to getting into college, providing tutoring services, and share personal anecdotes and advice to prospective college-bound youth.

Do you have an idea for a program to increase a college-going culture for K-8 students?

Academic Tutoring

Academic Tutors help increase student success at partnering middle and high school sites. Â鶹ƵµÀstudents work off-site at a partner school site in the Los Angeles area to provide in-classroom support in various academic subjects with an emphasis on math and English.

High school students receive coaching from NPP's college coaches
College Coaching

College Coaches provide support for high school students that are preparing for post-secondary education. Â鶹ƵµÀStudents may assist GEAR UP students with personal statements, financial literacy, and necessary application requirements as they transition from high school to higher education.

Gear Up students hold a sign that reads "History"
Look at College

Look at College Days allow GEAR UP students to experience a day at college with their peers. High School students may hear from professors, administrators, and participate in college sports! Â鶹ƵµÀstudents may volunteer to give informational tours and serve on panels on these days.

High school students explore Oxy's campus
Shadow Days

Shadow Days expose partnering high school students to a typical day at college. Â鶹ƵµÀstudents may volunteer to show the high school students around campus, take them to their classes, an on-campus job, lunch, or anything else they have planned for their regular college day!

Â鶹ƵµÀstudents give high school students a tour of campus
Campus Tours

Unlike Admissions tours, NPP’s campus tours focus more on the college-going experience than the campus itself. These tours are geared towards elementary and middle school students that may never have been on a college campus before.

Students in dialogue as part of SYC
Supporting Youth of Color

Supporting Youth of Color (SYC) began as a pilot program in the Spring of 2018 with the goal of encouraging small group dialogues on various social justice topics in partner high schools. Â鶹ƵµÀstudents work as Dialogue Facilitators by planning lectures, encouraging conversation, and holding space for high school students.
