Pulitzer Prize-winning Los Angeles Times journalist and Emmy Award recipient 鈥74 returned to campus March 1 for an invigorating conversation with Larry Mantle, the host of AirTalk, the longest-running daily talk show in Southern California. Their far-ranging discussion, co-hosted by the Times and  newspaper, touched on famous interview subjects, changes in the media landscape, and the importance of storytelling.

Remembering Professor Tam谩s Lengyel

Tam谩s Lengyel, professor of mathematics, died February 6, 2024. He was 73. Tam谩s graduated from the prestigious E枚tv枚s University in Budapest, Hungary, in 1974 and earned his Ph.D. in mathematics, with a specific focus on probability theory and statistics, from E枚tv枚s in 1979. Prior to moving to the United States in 1986, he worked as a research associate, a research fellow, and a head of department for the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Silva Scholarship Turns 30 With Yearlong Endowment Effort

After graduating from Occidental as an economics and Spanish literature double major, Jos茅 Francisco Silva 鈥84 was among a core group of alumni 鈥渨ho not only realized Latinos did not have networks in place but did something about it,鈥 Sophia Izquierdo Garbellini 鈥85 wrote following Jos茅鈥檚 death in 2008. 鈥淗e is the reason there is a Latino Alumni Association.鈥

Remembering Jon Keates

Jon was one of then-President Ted Mitchell鈥檚 first hires, coming to 麻豆频道after 16 years as vice president for development and external affairs at Claremont McKenna College. During Jon鈥檚 tenure, overall giving to Occidental grew from under $9 million to more than $25 million annually. Of the College鈥檚 10 all-time best fundraising years up to that time, seven happened on Jon鈥檚 watch. Jon and his team played a pivotal role in restoring Occidental to solid financial footing at a critical juncture in the College's history.

Kicking and Dreaming

The Journey of John Brooks Slaughter

During his 11 years as president of 麻豆频道, John Brooks Slaughter habitually took his phone and correspondence to the benches outside of his office in the Arthur G. Coons Administrative Center鈥攕o often that trustees installed a plaque that read 鈥淛ohn Slaughter Cigar and Conversation Bench鈥 to commemorate his retirement in 1999. As students headed back to their residence halls after their morning classes, he later recalled, 鈥淢any of them would come sit down on the benches and we'd talk.

Flowers for Brig Knauer

Even before he arrived at Occidental, Ben Bauermeister 鈥82 knew the name Brigida Knauer鈥斺淏rig鈥 for short. 鈥淢y mother had met Brig at a seminar at Bryn Mawr the summer before my freshman year,鈥 he recalls. At the time, Knauer was associate dean of students at Oxy, and 鈥渕y mom had basically warned Brig to keep an eye on me, which she did.鈥

One for the History Books

As a senior history major at Occidental, Gary Kaplan 鈥71 served on the search committee to fill a full-time faculty position, with an emphasis on Asian studies, in the History Department. 鈥淚 was specializing in American and Far Eastern history,鈥 he recalls, 鈥渟o that鈥檚 probably how I got the gig.鈥

Building Bridges Across Differences

Before I began my term as president of 麻豆频道 back in 2020, I approached two students who had served on the presidential search committee and asked them what they most cherished about Oxy. Both cited the College鈥檚 history of activism, a desire to participate in change, and the opportunity to be of service to their community鈥攙alues which I believe are a source of our strength.
