Photographer Janna Ireland, assistant professor of art and art history, will have a solo exhibition at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara.
The exhibition, , opens at both venues on Feb. 11 and runs through June 2. True Story Index will feature photographs from across Ireland’s oeuvre, which focuses on family, home, the expression of Black identity in American culture, and structures designed by renowned Black architect Paul R. Williams.
Ireland began teaching at Occidental in Fall 2022 as one of the College’s first two Mellon Faculty Diversity Initiative Post-Doctoral Fellows. This program allows the College to identify and recruit promising scholars whose work focuses on issues of race and/or social justice and whose expertise and experiences will contribute to diversifying Oxy’s faculty.
Ireland’s photographs are held in the permanent collections of several prestigious institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Nevada Museum of Art, the California African American Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago.
