Event Date: Sep. 25, 2024
Join MAC Professor Aleem Hossain and writer-director-actor Brian Silverman as they screen and then discuss Silverman's indie feature film "Two Lives in Pittsburgh." The film has won more than a dozen festival awards including the Audience Award at Dances With Films.
Film Threat called it "compassionate and profound" and ScreenCritix said it was "an important cinematic exploration of contemporary social issues."
Hossain and Silverman will discuss how Silverman shot this low budget film and secured worldwide distribution. They will also discuss the film's unique exploration of gender identity from the point of view of a blue collar family and how the film has started conversations about these topics in communities across America.
As Silverman says in his director statement:
"This isn’t a culture war movie about gender identity. Rather, this film looks at how imperfect people stumble through it when it’s part of their own lives. Most families who face gender identity issues have to navigate anger, love, confusion, grief, understanding, misunderstanding, shame, doubt, worry, and more. Most get things wrong. Most make mistakes with their words and their actions. And most - even the ones doing shitty things - come from a place of love. That is what this film reflects: A portrait of how to love your kid for who they are and how to become the parent they need you to be."
The film also marks the acting debut of Emma Basques, a transgender actor and activist.
Content Advisory: this film features some characters using offensive language related to race, gender, and sexual orientation.
