Alberto Saldamando will give a talk followed by a Q&A session, highlighting the disproportionate effects of climate change encountered by indigenous communities while uplifting indigenous climate activism and the important place it must hold in the current dialogue.
Alberto Saldamando will discuss a brief history of indigenous peoples at the UN, their accomplishments, and then highlight the environmental fora where indigenous people are currently engaged. The latter half of his talk will revolve around his personal involvement and experience in the realm of climate change and the challenges often faced by activists. The lecture portion of the talk will be followed by a moderated and audience-led Q&A session. Alberto began his climate change work with the Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) in 2009 at the UNFCCC COP15, currently serves as IEN’s head of delegation to UNFCCC Conferences of Parties and served as General Counsel of the International Indian Treaty Council for 18 years. In those capacities, he has been an active participant in the negotiations leading to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the establishment of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, and the initial mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
