Peace, Transitional Justice, and Human Rights in Colombia: Global Lessons

 

 

Colombia's 2016 peace accord was meant to bring an end to over a half-century of civil war. The accord's implementation has been both conceptually ambitious and politically troubled. This raises issues relevant to those hoping to learn from Colombia’s innovative approaches to peacebuilding, transitional justice, and accountability for histories of injustice.

-Camilo Sánchez, University of Virginia. Professor Sánchez is director of UVA’s and former research director of Dejusticia (Bogotá Colombia) and associate professor of law at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

 

October 18 at 5:40 P.M: “Fabrics of Memory: Grassroots cultural activism and civic engagement at Colombia’s Center for Memory, Peace, and Reconciliation”

-Ricardo Velasco Trujillo, Clemson University and. Professor Velasco is a social documentarian and Latin American cultural studies scholar who documents memorialization practices and micro-scale movements for reparation and historical redress among Afro-descendant and refugee communities in Colombia.

 

October 30  at 5:40 P.M: “Making Rights Claims: High Risk Feminism in Colombia”

 -Julia Zulver. Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas (UNAM, Mexico) and the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (Oxford, UK).

 

November 15 at 5:40 P.M: “Truth: Community-led truth processes in Mexico and Colombia”

-Ev Meade, head of Proceso Pacífico. Proceso Pacífico facilitates peacebuilding and transitional justice at the citizen level across Mexico, and is now initiating projects in Colombia and the United States.
