The Biology Seminar Series of Spring 2019 continues with Melissa DeBiasse's talk, "Boring sponges and glowing ctenophores: using genomes to understand how marine invertebrates respond to their environment within minutes and over millions of years."
I use genome sequence data as a tool to understand how marine invertebrates respond to their environments. I measure changes in gene expression to understand how individuals cope with day-to-day environmental stress and compare patterns of gene gain and loss to understand how species evolve over generations. In my seminar I will present my research testing how ocean acidification affects corals and sponges in the Caribbean and how bioluminescence has evolved across ctenophores.
